Luisenpark in Mannheim – Chinese Tea Garden and daffodiles
After my visit in Chinese Garden in Frankfurt last spring I was very inspired by the combination of the oriental architecture and subtlety of early spring nature. This year I was looking for similar places close to Rhine-Main area I found that Mannheim has the Chinese Tea Garden, so I was really excited to see it. On a map it looks like it is just a part of a huge park. It is true, however it is not a regular city park opened to everyone, but a whole entertainment complex – Luisenpark. You need a ticket to enter and it is a bit pricy, but definitely worth the money. The very…

Tropical Butterfly Garden – paradise in Sayn
How do you imagine the paradise looks like? If it is green, warm, full of creatures, with birds singing and colourful butterflies flying around you, I think I found one! Butterfly Garden in Sayn is all of it or even more. Long winter which we experienced this year was quite depressing, so I was looking for any place, where the plants are green and it is warm, but not too far. And I found one – Butterfly Garden, much closer than expected, even within the same country. Sayn is located 10-15 km from Koblenz (Germany). It lies close to the Rhine river, but not directly. Butterfly Garden is…

5 beautiful rose gardens in Germany you will fall in love with
I am writing it on a cold snowy March day. Spring is not coming any time soon and only colourful photos remind me of warm afternoons spent in parks and rose gardens. Personally, I like when the park has some little garden with flowers and herbs and some bench to have a sit and just relax. Since roses are the queens of the flower kingdom, they always have a special place in any garden, especially the royal ones close to palaces. Today I present my favorite beautiful rose gardens I visited in Germany. Each one has a unique style and atmosphere, but all of them somehow amazed me. Maybe they…

Rose Heights – colourful rose garden in Darmstadt
During my first trip to Darmstadt I discovered a lot of interesting places, eg. Waldspirale, Garden of Prince George, Mathildenhöhe. I still have so much more to see, so now I regularly visit this city. I was in the Rose Heights (Rosenhöhe) park before, but in winter season, so obviously I had to come back to see it when all the flowers blossom. There are different options how to reach the park: it is just 5 minutes walk from Mathildenhöhe – along the Olbrichweg and through the Lion Gate another entrance is just close to the Ostbanhof – train station, so you can arrive by train or by one of…

From Frankfurt to China for free
Frankfurt city has a special offer for its citizens and visitors. Anyone can travel to China for free. In the center of Frankfurt, close to the busy Zeil, there is a little oasis – Bethmannpark. It is full of flowers, trees and grass, which makes it popular place to relax on warm afternoons and weekends. Inside the park there is another one. And that is where the magic happens. You cross the gate with lions and you find yourself in the Chinese Garden or “Garden of Heavenly Peace”. It is described as very calm and peaceful place, but on weekends, full of tourists, it is not so quiet. It…

Colours of Darmstadt and how to find a secret garden
I knew from friends that Darmstadt is grey, sad and boring. I also never heard of anything worth visiting there. But living so close I had to give it a try. This time without any plan. I was just wandering around looking for colours of Darmstadt. Here is what I found. It is going to be a walk around the city, which can be done in one day and covers a lot of places. It can be also combined with bus or tram trip if walking is too much. Hauptbahnhof and Mornewegstrasse Let’s start at the central train station (Darmstadt Hbf). From here a lot of buses and trams leave, but…

Spring flowers – first blossoms of the year
Who was not waiting for spring to come? And now finally it is here! Full of colours and first blossoms. Spring flowers scents and sounds of birds singing bring new hope and joy after long cold months. This time Botanic Garden in Frankfurt offers exhibition of most common spring flowers: daffodils, hyacinths, irises and tulips. Swans still sleep covered by shy sun rays, but around in the grass there are already plenty of colourful crocuses and snowdrops. They don’t stay for a long time, so let’s enjoy this special time of the year.

Winter garden – colourful beauties
Normal, white winter can be so beautiful with snow and frosty motives everywhere, but not here in Mainz. Snow was present for only 1-2 weeks and the only remainder of winter is cold. This makes me already dream about spring with its blossoms and colours. Since I still may need to wait for it quite a long time, I decided to give it a chance and look for flowers already now. To my surprise it was not that difficult. There are plenty of plants, which look pretty even in the cold season. Others, although in some vegetative state, still look really interesting. Obviously the colours are not that intense. There…

Tropicarium in Frankfurt – jungle in the city jungle
Traffic jams, honking taxis, crowded metro, shiny skyscrapers – that’s how one can think about Frankfurt. But somewhere in the centre of this city jungle there is a place that looks way different. Tropicarium in the Palm Garden (Palmengarten) is a green island in the middle of the city. Located in Westend, Palm Garden is easily accessible from Central train station by tram (16) or by U-Bahn (U4,U6,U7). The closest station is Bockenheimer Warte. There are two gates to the park: from Palmenartenstrasse or Siesmayerstrasse. Entry to the Tropicarium is included in the fee for the whole park. Entering one of the first greenhouses we see the turning globe. It…
