Mainz – the pink queen of the Rhine
Mainz is the largest city of Rhineland Palatinate, Gutenberg’s home-town and Germany’s wine capital. Some people call it a pink city. What is the reason for this? In this post, I will look at Mainz through rose-colored glasses to find out. Old Town Let’s start on one summer Sunday morning. Cobbles under my feet don’t make it easy to walk the streets of Old Town, especially in hills. The bells from church towers scare the pigeons. Apart from them, there is almost no one around. All shops are closed. Only cafes and restaurants have open doors and tables outside. Now there is only a queue in front of a bakery,…

Treasure hunting at Saturday flea market in Mainz
Every Saturday morning hundreds of people come to the University Mainz campus to hunt for treasures at the flea market. It starts at 7 a.m. and lasts until 13, which may depend on weather – on rainy days there is less choice and it closes earlier. This market is opened every Saturday whole year round. It’s easy to access by bus or tram from city centre. The closest stops are: Friedrich-von-Pfeiffer-Weg, Hochschule, Staudingerweg. There is also plenty of parking space around. Winter garden – colourful beauties
Normal, white winter can be so beautiful with snow and frosty motives everywhere, but not here in Mainz. Snow was present for only 1-2 weeks and the only remainder of winter is cold. To my surprise it was not that difficult. There are plenty of plants, which look pretty even in the cold season. Others, although in some vegetative state, still look really interesting. Obviously the colours are not that intense. There…

Where Main meets Rhine – a walk by the river
Another interesting thing to see in the Mainz-Wiesbaden area is the place where the Main discharges into the Rhine. It gives endless options for a walk. One can be at the side of Mainz, with a view to opposite side – Wiesbaden. The riverbank in Mainz is much more urbanised, with usually a lot of people, especially during the weekends. From the side of Wiesbaden there is a view to panorama of Mainz and the path is more like in the park, with a lot of trees and grass. To make a walk even more interesting it is possible to cross any of the bridges (Theodor-Heuss- Brücke, Südbrücke or Main-Brücke) and continue…
