Berlin zoo – the best zoo in the world?

The oldest, the biggest, but is it the best zoo in Germany? Berlin zoo attracts millions of tourists per year, not without a reason. It has a great selection of animals – more than 18 000!

When tired of visiting museums and overwhelmed with Berlin’s  history coming to the zoo is a nice alternative. Especially in summer time when the weather is nice and most of animals are outside. Since the area of this park is so big, it might take even 4-5h to see everything. The zoo is divided into Tierpark and Aquarium, but both are worth visiting. To avoid queues buy tickets online.

The tickets office has some booklets with maps of the park, but quite pricy. It is better to download a mobile app. The best thing in the park is that tourists can see the feeding. Every day there is a schedule with times and animals to see. It is definitely one of the biggest attractions.

All the cages are made the way to resemble the natural habitat of animals. Impossible to name all of them, but… there are funny gorillas, which look like humans and play with food like with balls; orangutans, which are so smart that try to escape the cage by destroying the glass with some hand-made weapons; a hippo in a swimming pool, that people can see also from the bottom through transparent glass; pandas, which are generally rear to see.

In the aquarium there are sharks, piranhas and plenty of jellyfish. Nocturnal animals are literally hidden under the ground and people watch them in almost total darkness.

Obviously there are also restaurants and gift shops, to relax a bit, buy some sweet plush toys and send a postcard to friends.

The zoo is in the city centre and very easy to find –  just opposite the exit of train station –  Zoologischer Garten.

When planning your next trip to Berlin add the ZOO to your list!
